New system allows robots to continuously map their environment

Robots could one day navigate through constantly changing surroundings with virtually no input from humans, thanks to a system that allows them to build and continuously update a three-dimensional map of their environment using a low-cost camera such as Microsoft’s Kinect.

The system, being developed by researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), could also allow blind people to make their way unaided through crowded buildings such as hospitals and shopping malls.

To explore unknown environments, robots need to be able to map them as they move around — estimating the distance between themselves and nearby walls, for example — and to plan a route around any obstacles, says Maurice Fallon, a research scientist at CSAIL who is developing these systems alongside John J. Leonard, professor of mechanical and ocean engineering, and graduate student Hordur Johannsson.

But while a large amount of research has been devoted to developing one-off maps that robots can use to navigate around an area, these systems cannot adjust to changes in the surroundings over time, Fallon says: “If you see objects that were not there previously, it is difficult for a

Once the system is certain of its location, any new features that have appeared since the previous picture was taken can be incorporated into the map by combining the old and new images of the scene, Fallon says.

The team tested the system on a robotic wheelchair, a PR2 robot developed by Willow Garage in Menlo Park, Calif., and in a portable sensor suite worn by a human volunteer. They found it could locate itself within a 3-D map of its surroundings while traveling at up to 1.5 meters per second.

Ultimately, the algorithm could allow robots to travel around office or hospital buildings, planning their own routes with little or no input from humans, Fallon says.

It could also be used as a wearable visual aid for blind people, allowing them to move around even large and crowded buildings independently, says Seth Teller, head of the Robotics, Vision and Sensor Networks group at CSAIL and principal investigator of the human-portable mapping project. “There are also a lot of military applications, like mapping a bunker or cave network to enable a quick exit or re-entry when needed,” he says. “Or a HazMat team could enter a biological or chemical weapons site and quickly map it on foot, while marking any hazardous spots or objects for handling by a remediation team coming later. These teams wear so much equipment that time is of the essence, making efficient mapping and navigation critical.”

While a great deal of research is focused on developing algorithms to allow robots to create maps of places they have visited, the work of Fallon and his colleagues takes these efforts to a new level, says Radu Rusu, a research scientist at Willow Garage who was not involved in this project. That is because the team is using the map the entire 3-D space, not just viewing everything in two dimensions.

“This opens up exciting new possibilities in robot research and engineering, as the old-school ‘flatland’ assumption that the scientific community has been using for many years is fundamentally flawed,” he says. “Robots that fly or navigate in environments with stairs, ramps and all sorts of other indoor architectural elements are getting one step closer to actually doing something useful. And it all starts with being able to navigate.”

Hitachi Travelstar C4K60 1.8-inch Drive

With the needs of the consumer electronics (CE) industry top of mind, HitachiGlobal Storage Technologies today announced a new, redesigned 1.8-inch hard diskdrive that is tailored to device manufacturers' needs - easy integration andless space consumption. In doing so, Hitachi has created a sleeker 1.8-inch harddrive that is specialized for consumer electronics.

Hitachi has replaced the standard notebook-based connector on its new TravelstarC4K60 series with a ZIF connector*, widely implemented in CE devices today. Withthe ZIF connector, Hitachi has reduced the footprint of its new drive by 10percent and enabled easier integration through a common connector, which the CEindustry has been using successfully for many years.

In portable consumer electronics, small is cool. This makes Hitachi's CE-focused1.8-inch drive the coolest cat on the block; the drive offers the smallestfootprint (3780 mm2) and lightest weight (46 grams) in its class.

"Real estate is precious commodity in consumer devices, which is why we'vefocused on reducing the space consumption of our 1.8-inch product to helpmanufacturers make smaller and sleeker devices," said Bob Holleran, generalmanager, 2.5-inch/ 1.8-inch Consumer & Commercial HDDs, Hitachi Global StorageTechnologies. "This move to create a CE-specific hard drive is one of many thatHitachi will be making to serve this growing market in a very focused way."

Size and weight aren't the only important factors in designing hard drives forthe CE space. Cramming the greatest amount of data onto a hard disk is alsoimportant to enable high capacities in increasingly smaller devices. The C4K60achieves that objective with an areal density of 99.8 gigabits per square inch, which leads the category for the 1.8-inch segment. At this density, Hitachi ismaking possible 30 gigabytes (GB)** of storage capacity on a single disk.

"Hitachi is clearly demonstrating that it's taking the CE segment seriously withthis new drive," said John Donovan, vice president of TrendFocus. "Because ofits size, high storage capacity and shock specifications, the 1.8-inch harddrive segment is defining the use of hard drives in consumer electronic deviceswhere the balance between device size and high capacity is key."

Focused On Consumer

Hitachi has considered both the needs of CE end-users and device manufacturersin creating the Travelstar C4K60 series.

"Our goal in adding and fine-tuning features on our new 1.8-inch drive is tomake it the 'essential gear' for consumer devices, alongside our award-winningone-inch Microdrive and 2.5-inch Travelstar products," said Holleran.

For device manufacturers, the ZIF connector on Hitachi's new drive providessize- and ease-of-integration benefits, but it may also result in lower designand integration costs and greater reliability. Additionally, the ZIF connector, which allows the drive to talk to the host device through a flex cable, givesmanufacturers greater flexibility in mounting schemes. For example, manufacturers could mount the Travelstar 1.8-inch drive in a floating scheme andimplement dampening or insulative materials around the drive for even bettershock protection. The ZIF connector also makes for more reliable devices throughits reduced pin-count - 40 compared to the 50 on the notebook-based connectors.

At 500 Gs operating and 1200 Gs non-operating, the C4K60 series already providesexcellent shock protection, making the 1.8-inch category the best shockperformer among all other hard disk drive categories. This is a boon for activeconsumers who often give their portable CE devices a workout in daily usage.

High-quality sound in portable entertainment devices is also of great importanceto consumers. But being light on its feet doesn't make the Travelstar C4K60series a lightweight in acoustics; the drive offers excellent noise-reductiontechnology to optimize users' listening experience. The drive's sound emissionat idle and seek operation (1.6- and 2.2-bels, consecutively) are extremely lowand undetectable by the human ear. This adds significantly to the userexperience, especially in music and video applications where 1.8-inch harddrives are growing in popularity.

The power-management features of Hitachi's new 1.8-inch drive are targeted atproviding optimum conservation in the modes at which the drive spends most ofits time: idle, read and standby. The C4K60 series offers the best combinationof power consumption in these modes, enabling up to 32 hours*** of play time inthe average digital music device.

"Hitachi has done a good job of listening to what is important to us in makingand selling CE devices with hard disk drives, especially in the portablesegment," said Mr. Chua Hiap Chew, vice president, Personal DigitalEntertainment Products, Creative Technology. "Size, capacity points, connector, power consumption and shock must all be considered differently than for ITapplications, and Hitachi has done an admirable job in creating the rightbalance of all these factors in its new 1.8-inch CE product."

The Travelstar C4K60 series for consumer electronics operates at 4200 RPM and isavailable in 20- and 30-GB capacities -- the most popular capacity points forthe MP3 segment, where 1.8-inch drives are most prevalent.

EMC Announces World's Largest, Fastest and Most Scalable High-End Storage Array

EMC Corporation announced the largest, fastest and most scalable high-end storage array in the world, capable of providing leading functionality while scaling to one petabyte (1,024 terabytes) of capacity. The new Symmetrix DMX-3 system represents another industry milestone for EMC and leverages its market-leading Direct Matrix Architecture to provide demanding customers with unparalleled functionality, performance and tiered storage capabilities in a single system to support their information lifecycle management (ILM) strategies.

The new Symmetrix DMX-3 system complements the current Symmetrix DMX-2 Series of systems, the high-end storage market share leader. The Symmetrix DMX-3 system builds on the success of the existing Symmetrix DMX-2 Series by storing more data and delivering higher performance for customers who want to consolidate their information onto a high-end platform. The Symmetrix DMX-3 exceeds the capabilities of existing systems through a design that features increased processing power and internal bandwidth, new memory technology and support for lower cost disk drives. The Symmetrix DMX-3 system will enable customers to replace multiple existing storage platforms with a single system and pay-as-you-grow economics. The new storage array supports up to 960 disk drives today, and will be qualified to support up to 1,920 disk drives in the first half of 2006 and more than 2,000 by the end of next year.

Tony Prigmore, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group, said, "The EMC Symmetrix DMX architecture and its capability to scale capacity and performance continue to provide EMC with key competitive advantages. Large storage customers who continue to look for ways to ease management burdens and lower costs through consolidation will find the new Symmetrix DMX-3 offers industry-leading single-system scalability. In particular, we expect the new capability to tier storage within the array to drive demand for EMC's newest member of the DMX series."

Extending High-End Innovation and Leadership

The Symmetrix DMX-3 system was specifically designed with the performance, scalability and reliability required to support high-end configurations in a single array. The extensible DMX architecture provides the Symmetrix DMX-3 with near linear performance scalability as channel directors, memory directors and disk directors are added to the system. With a doubling of internal bandwidth, processing power and the addition of fully mirrored global memory directors based on DDR (Dual Data Rate) SDRAM memory technologies, the Symmetrix DMX-3 is the industry's highest-performing storage array in addition to being the largest.

Kevin Hart, Chief Information Officer at Level 3 Communications, one of the world's largest Internet carriers and a Symmetrix DMX-3 beta site, said, "Level 3 serves many of the world's largest and most sophisticated communications companies, carrying more than three petabytes of IP traffic across our network on a daily basis. As such, our business generates a vast amount of data that is critical to our own operations as well as those of our customers. The processing power and capacity of the EMC Symmetrix DMX-3 will, we believe, help us enhance the efficiency and quality of order management, billing, provisioning and other strategically important back-office processes and systems."

The new Symmetrix DMX-3 array is composed of a single system bay and separate storage bays. Each bay is powered independently and contains a scalable power and battery backup infrastructure to support the components within each bay. System capacity can be upgraded non-disruptively by adding either another storage bay or adding additional disk drives into available space. Likewise, additional processing power can be added by installing additional director boards while the system is online. The Symmetrix DMX-3 is compatible with all of EMC's leading high-end functionality and software.

"The new EMC Symmetrix DMX family delivers on the scalable design promise of the DMX architecture," said David Donatelli, EMC Executive Vice President, Storage Platforms Operations. "Our competition has not been able to match Symmetrix DMX-2's unique combination of scalable performance and functionality, and we are again raising the bar. We introduced innovative new high-end software functionality last year and this new system can take advantage of all of our leading capabilities. This reduces costs for our customers in terms of hardware and software acquisition and maintenance and reduces operational and management expenses. We're allowing customers to do more with less hardware, greatly enhancing total cost of ownership."

New Disk Drives and Data Mobility Software Enable "In-the-Box" Tiered Storage

The entire Symmetrix DMX Series, including the new Symmetrix DMX-3 system, will support new low-cost Fibre Channel (LC-FC) disk drives. This latest disk drive technology, expected to be available in early 2006, will enable "in-the-box" tiered storage, allowing multiple tiers of storage to be implemented in a single Symmetrix DMX system as part of an ILM strategy. Combined with EMC's broad portfolio of array, network and host-based data migration software and professional services, including today's announcement of the new EMC/Softek LDMF and EMC Open Migrator/LM software (see separate releases), EMC is further extending its lead in high-end storage and is providing new ways for enterprise customers to improve the management of information throughout its lifecycle and reduce total cost of ownership.

Gift guide for tech fiends

It's that time of year again - time to start thinking about holiday gifts.

I've been on the lookout for tech gift ideas and have found quite a few for everyone from the budget shopper to the big spender. The good news is that, thanks to falling prices, you don't have to spend a lot of money to get some great gifts.

UP TO $50: Apple is offering its

For media lovers, you'll find Apple TV, which allows users to watch videos from iTunes, Netflix and YouTube on their televisions, and Roku's line of digital media players, which offer a wider variety of video content providers. You can also find some more powerful iPod speaker systems, including JBL's doughnut-shaped On Stage Micro, in this range.

On the game front, you'll find recently released or soon-to-be-released hits such as "Halo: Reach" for the Xbox 360, "Gran Turismo 5" for the

But digital cameras might provide the most bang for the buck in this price range. You'll find a variety of entry-level cameras from top brands such as Canon, Nikon, Casio and Kodak for $60 to $100. And entry level isn't what it used to be: These cameras have features formerly found on high-end models, such as 10-megapixel sensors, 3-times optical zoom lenses and even the ability, in some cases, to shoot high-definition videos.

$100 TO $250: This price range moves into the sweet spot for tech gadgets. For gamers, you'll find mainstream systems, including the Nintendo Wii ($200), Nintendo's line of DS handhelds ($130 to $170), Microsoft's 4-gigabyte Xbox 360 ($200) and Sony's Android.

Those in the market for a laptop will find a wide variety of desktop replacements, gaming machines and Apple's entire notebook lineup. The standout model among all these is Apple's 13-inch MacBook Air ($1,300 for the 128-gigabyte model and $1,600 for the 256-gigabyte model), which is superfast, ultralight, razor-thin and way cool.

For the living room, you'll find numerous 3-D-enabled, LED-backlit and Internet-connectible televisions. If you want and can afford the top of the line, Samsung's 9000 series televisions ($2,600 for the 46-inch model, $3,100 for the 55-inch one) are stunning with their thin profile - less than one-third of an inch - and burnished stainless bezel. And their picture's not bad, either.

If you get a 3-D television, you'll want to watch more on it than the handful of 3-D movies and programs now available. Panasonic's 3-D digital camcorder ($1,400), one of the first such camcorders targeted at consumers, can fill the need. The camcorder has the ability to shoot in 1080p and dual-image sensors to generate the stereoscopic effect.

Dell teases unnamed 15-inch ultrathin notebook PC

Are you the kind of user to believes that notebooks should come with large displays in order to make it easy for the mobile professional to read through walls of text without having to squint like how it is done on smaller-sized notebooks? Well, if you are, you are in luck: Dell has officially announced the existence of a brand-new 15-inch notebook up its sleeves which it touts as one of the thinnest such notebooks to exist, and has even released a few teaser images to show off just how thin and well-designed the notebook is.

Of course, Dell had taken measures to ensure that it did not reveal any more information than it needed to in order to capture the audiences attention, and the press release we were issued with seems to confirm that fact. However, Dell did mention that the ultrathin 15-inch tablet will be powered by either an Intel Core i5 or an i7 processor, and that the casing used to house the notebooks hardware is less than an inch thin. More importantly, the images released by Dell seems to suggest that the unnamed notebooks casing will be built out of metal instead of the tough plastic favoured by most OEMs today.

As expected, the press release contains no information about the notebooks release date and pricing, though Dell did mention that it will be keeping us in the loop for any further updates about the unnamed notebook, so do check back for updates.

ECS First Motherboard Vendor to Support AMP

ECS announced that its the first motherboard vendor to support the AMP (AMD Memory Profile) standard. Think of AMP as the companys equivalent to Intel XMP. Its certainly not the first time AMD toyed with custom SPD standards.

ECS current (by means of a BIOS update) and upcoming motherboards will feature support for AMP, a SPD custom-profile standard along the lines of Intel XMP (eXtreme Memory Profile). The standard allows memory vendors to ship their modules with tiny bits of firmware that tell the system BIOS what specifications the module is capable of, which exceed JEDEC-governed specifications. These include high DRAM clock speeds, the right DRAM timings to support it, and just the right DRAM voltages to support the two. Memory with high advertised DRAM speeds dont run at them out of the box, and require manual overclocking, which can be avoided by features such as XMP and the new AMP.

Settings related to AMP are found in similar BIOS configuration pages as Intel XMP, the M.I.B. III (system overclocking) section. AMP-certified modules will typically ship with multiple SPD profiles, some JEDEC-certified, and one or more AMP certified; again much like Intel XMP certified modules.

An interesting trivia here is that AMP isnt AMDs first attempt at custom SPD profiles. The company has had a standard known as AMD Black Edition Memory, which works in a similar way to AMP, except that you need to enable the advertised speed profile using AMDs Overdrive software. An example of such memory modules is pictured above. Interestingly, Patriot Memory is an OEM for AMD Radeon-branded memory, which is resold by tertiary partners such as VisionTek.

AMD AMP could gain relevance in the coming months, when the companys second-generation desktop APUs, codenamed "Trinity" launch, with a contingent of socket compatible FM2 motherboards. Also planned for later this year is AMDs new core-logic for socket AM3+ "Vishera" second-generation FX processors. Opportinities aplenty for the likes of ECS.

Another Chinese tablet shows up at the FCC, boasts HDMI and Android 2.3

Chinese tablets can be such wonderful devices, no? After all, it is common knowledge that such devices produced by Chinese OEMs often boast extremely competitive prices in order to make them affordable for the common man on the street. And sometimes, just sometimes, these cheap, entry-level tablets can even boast specifications that are worthy enough to give their big-name counterparts a run for their money. You know, just like this M722HC made by a Chinese OEM known as Shenzhen Yifang Digital Technology, which has somehow managed to find its way over to the FCCs office.

According to a report published by Liliputing, the M722HC tablet is makes use of a seven inch capacitive touchscreen display which sports a native resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. While that might appear unacceptably low by todays standards, Liliputing has also added that the M722HC has been preloaded with version 2.3 of the Android operating system, a trait which is not known to be very common on such Chinese tablets, many of which are still powered by the older 2.2 version.

In addition, Liliputing has claimed in its report that the M722HC sports some rather decent specifications for an entry-level tablet. Apparently, the tablet is powered by a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, while memory is provided by 512MB of RAM. Furthermore, Liliputing has also claimed that the tablet will reportedly support 1080p video playback for a variety of common video codecs such as H.264, DiVX, Xvid and MPEG (1 and 2), along with audio playback support for common formats such as MP3, AAC, WAV, OGG and yes, FLAC.

Lastly, Liliputings report has confirmed that the tablet will feature built-in support 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and the bundled battery pack is reportedly capable of up to six hours of uptime "when watching videos or surfing the web over WiFi". Also present on the device are aHDMI-out port,USB port, microSD card port and a headset jack, along with options ranging between 2GB and 16GB of internal storage space.

No mention about availability or pricing has been announced for the M722HC tablet at this point of time.

AMD's Socket 754 to Outlast Socket 939

AMD has been performing very well in terms of delivering new products to the masses as well as ensuring that shipments are on time. With regards to processors and platforms, AMD is now in a position where it can diversify at its own pace and not have to be in Intel's shadow.

This year, we will be seeing a great deal of things happening with AMD's processors as well as the sockets that hold them. Coming with these changes will be new motherboards as well as opportunities for new platforms. DailyTech last reported on AMD's next-generation generation socket F, which is a LGA-type socket with 1207 pins. The new socket will be home to AMD's upcoming dual-core as well as quad-core Opterons.

Despite the need for more complex interfaces to support multi-core processors, AMD's existing socket 754 will be outlasting the more complex socket 939. Currently, socket 939 is home to AMD's Athlon 64, Athlon 64 X2 and Athlon 64 FX processors while socket 754 is for Sempron. According to AMD documentation, all socket 939 processors will stop shipping Q2 2007 with final orders occurring nearly half a year before end-date. AMD Roadmaps have socket 939 end of life (EOL) in Q4'06, while socket 754 is EOL Q4'07.

For socket 939 processors, the first to fall off the charts will be Athlon 64 processors based on Venice core, with last orders occurring in the Q2 of this year and shipments stopping by the end of Q4. Athlon 64 processors based on San Diego will see similar results starting in Q4. Interestingly, while the Athlon FX 60 recently just launched, AMD will be taking final orders in Q4 of this year. Athlon X2 processors based on socket 939 will stop shipping in Q2 2007 with final orders being taken in Q4 of this year. Processors based on socket 754, such as AMD's Sempron will be continuing to ship well into 2007 and cease near the end of the year.

The move is to transition motherboard manufacturers over to AMD's new socket AM2, which is a unified socket architecture designed to hold both Athlon and Sempron processors, while Socket S1 will feature upcoming dual-core Turions. Processors based on the new AM2 interface will begin shipping later this year.

Android magazine banned from Apple App store

Apple has rejected a magazine app from Danish media company, Mediaprovider. It isn't at all surprising that apps on content of competing platforms wouldbe rejected by Apple App Store, though for the Danishmagazine app,Android Magasinet, it was due to its exclusive content on the Google's Android platform.

However, there areother Android news app available in the App Store likeAndroidworld Reader, and other apps about other operating systems.Mediaprovider's iPhone Magasinet and Gear magazine apps that deal with information and news about the Apple iPhone are both available for download from the App Store.

ASUS Adds New Finish to their notebook PCs

Taipei, Taiwan, June 4, 2009 – Today, ASUS showcased two new finishes that do much more than just beautify its products: Satin-brushed Aluminum and NeoWood. The Satin-brushed Aluminum finish, produced through Non-conductive Vapor Metallization (NCVM) technology, not only infuses treated surfaces with an elegant satin-brushed pattern, it provides scratch resistance, enhances the structural strength of the notebook, and improved wireless and Bluetooth performance.

The NeoWood finishing technique, which produces a high-strength wood grain veneer that looks and feels like real wood, is a first for the consumer electronics industry. It delivers all the benefits of real wood, including premium looks and natural tactility, while maintaining a level of resilience that far surpasses that of regular wood.

ASUS notebooks featuring the Satin-brushed Aluminum finish include the N81Vf, N60Sf and N51Vn, while the NeoWood finish can be enjoyed on the N60Sf*.

Satin-brushed Aluminum
The result of an innovative application of Non-conductive Vapor Metallization (NCVM) technology, ASUS' Satin-brushed Aluminum finish is a perfect example of form meeting function. It preserves the elegant coloration, luster and satin-brushed pattern of real brushed aluminum, yet offers vastly improved scratch resistance and strength. Another benefit of the Satin-brushed Aluminum finish is that it eliminates the interference of RF signals, which other metalized finishes such as aluminum cannot do. As a result, notebooks boasting the Satin-brushed Aluminum finish enjoy substantially improved 3D antenna efficiency and therefore greatly enhanced Wi-Fi and Bluetooth performance. ASUS notebooks featuring the Satin-brushed Aluminum finish include the N81Vf, N60Sf and N51Vn.

NeoWood
ASUS' NeoWood finish combines the familiarity and comfortable tactility of natural wood with the high tensile strength of modern synthetics. It looks and feels exactly like the wood used in high-end furniture, yet has much-improved hardness, friction resistance and abrasion resistance properties than regular wood. Notebooks that feature the NeoWood finish, such as the ASUS N60Sf, not only look breathtaking, they are structurally stronger as well.

*The ASUS N60Sf is available in both Satin-brushed Aluminum and NeoWood finishes.

Apple MacBook Pro refresh, adds Intel Core i5 and Intel Core i7 mobile processors

The 13-inch MacBook Pro machines are still stuck with Intel's Core 2 Duo processors (although faster at 2.4GHz and 2.66GHz), but it has a new NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics part. Seems like the new hardware and power optimizations are giving a longer battery life; Apple claims up to 10 hours with the 13-inch models.

As for the 15-inch MacBook Pro, it's available with either the Intel Core i5 (2.4GHz and 2.53GHz) or the Intel Core i7 (2.66GHz) processor. Abeefier NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 256MB VRAM does the job ofrendering your stufffor display. The highest spec-ed 15-inch Core i7 model has an increased amount of 512MB VRAM though.

And lastly we have the biggest 17-inch MacBook Pro, which is available with one processor - the Core i5 2.53GHz. The same GeForce GT 330M handles the graphics, but it has 512MB VRAM. Hmm, we wonder why only the 15-incher has a Core i7 option, and not the 17-inch.

Apple calls it 'automatic graphics switching', but it's actually NVIDIA's Optimus Technology at work. The discrete GT 330M GPU is switched on or off depending on the type of content displayed (such as games, design applications, Flash content, etc, basically stuff that can benefit from GPU acceleration);the workloadistransferred seamlessly between the NVIDIA chipand Intel's integrated HD Graphics core. Expect better battery life compared to laptops running solely on discrete graphics. Appleis confidentthatthe 15-inch and 17-inch modelscan last up to an impressive8-9 hours.

The rest of the parts are pretty uniform across the three models; all machines have:
- 4GB of DDR3 memory,
- mechanical hard drives as the default (250GB on the lowest end 13-inch, to 500GB on the higher end 15-inch and the 17-inch),
- glossy LED backlit displays (1280x800, 1440x900 and 1920x1200 for the 13-inch, 15-inch and 17-inch respectively)
- webcam,
- 8x SuperDrive
- mini DisplayPort,
- 2 USB 2.0 ports,
- 1 FireWire 800 port,
- SD card slot (the 17-inch has an ExpressCard 3/4 slot instead),
- backlit keyboard as standard

A few quick clicks into the Apple Store reveals a list of customizations available, such as the ability to upgrade the mechanical hard drive to a solid state drive (of up to 512GB capacity, and at the same time upgrading the size of the hole in your pocket), and even anti-glare screens (finally no more mirrors!).

Go on, the Apple Store is waiting.

ASUS ROG Rampage IV Extreme (X79) Review - Air Overclocking with Core i7-3960X

Introduction

We had already covered the ASUS Republic of Gamers Rampage IV Extreme in a exclusive preview last month, so we will spend the first section of the review talking about the newLGA 2011 based Sandy Bridge-E processor and the X79 Patsburg chipset.

Top of the line Core i7-3960X - 6 Core/12 Threads, 15MB Cache, Quad Channel IMC, AVX/AES/SSE4.2/SSE 4.2 support and a whopping 40 PCI-E lanes

The new SNB-E die is a lot bigger than Intels previous desktop offerings - no surprise as there are 2.27 billion transistors on die and six real processor cores (rather than pseudo integer/FP units). We also note with interest the 2 disabled cores - which will appear in the server Sandy Bridge-EP variants.

The SNB-E is the last of the 32nm desktop chips from Intel since Westmere. Next year, we will see the 22nm Ivy Bridge platform, which should bring significant power savings and higher operating frequencies.

Launching today is the six core i7-3960X (3.3GHz, 15MB cache) and the much cheaper i7-3930K (3.2GHz, 12MB cache). The TDP for the new chips are rated at 130W and they are poised to replace the aging Westmere based LGA1366 processors.

AMD releases Fusion APUs

It has been a long, long time coming. AMD has finally officiallyreleased its first Fusion products - E-series and C-series, based onZacate and Ontario respectively. As a recap, the Zacate products, branded Fusion E-series, are designed for notebooks, nettops andall-in-ones, and feature a 18W TDP. The two variants are E-350, 1.6 GHzdual-core and E-240, 1.5 GHz single core.

The C-series targets netbooks and "other emerging form factors". Previously codenamed Ontario, both variants have a lowly TDP of 9W. The C-50 is dual core clocked at 1.0 GHz, C-30 is a single core APU at 1.2 GHz.

Both APUs feature a Cedar(HD5400)-class GPU, with DX11 support, UVD3 and parallel processing capabilities. Fabbed at TSMC 40nm, C-series and E-series also feature a 64-bit integrated memory controller.

Products are expected to appear soon. Currently, the first Fusion based notebook to be listed is an Acer notebook, featuring the 1.6 GHz dual-core E-350, 2GB RAM, priced at a very reasonable $429, blurring the line between netbooks and notebooks.

AMD also touches on future plans with its Fusion plans. Of course, the next Fusion product will be Llano, based on enhanced 32nm K10.5 quad-cores and a full-blown Redwood-class GPU. The branding is revealed to be A-Series, with shipping scheduled for Q2 2011 and products based on Fusion A-series appearing in mid-2011.
